Abstract

Purpose

This paper presents a meta-analysis of the electronic banking (e-banking) customer loyalty literature in the last 10 years. The study investigated the moderating role of national culture in the relationship between e-banking customer loyalty and its antecedents.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a meta-analysis of customer loyalty in 19 countries, the authors incorporated national culture scores based on Hofstede's cultural dimensions to explore how the relative importance of e-banking customer loyalty antecedents varies across cultures.

Findings

The study revealed that national culture moderates the relationship between e-banking customer loyalty and its seven antecedents for four cultural dimensions, yet there was no significant moderation for satisfaction.

Research limitations/implications

This study reviewed the relationships in the literature on customer loyalty in e-banking contexts, extending and enriching the current knowledge. However, some specific limitations, such as the non-use of qualitative studies and the clipping of adverse concepts, exist in the secondary data and should be considered.

Practical implications

The results show that the seven antecedents affect e-banking customer loyalty to different degrees. Managers should incorporate cultural factors in e-banking customer management.

Originality/value

Only a few studies have assessed cultural differences in relation to e-banking customer loyalty. The authors address this need by offering deeper insights into how cultural dimensions moderate the relationships between e-banking customer loyalty and its antecedents through a meta-analytical review. The study findings offer managers a new perspective of leveraging the benefits of cultural differences, enhancing their decision-making in international business.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to study how global pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer have managed the challenges of pharmaceutical patent expiry.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study method was applied. The best-selling brand drug over the past 10 years – Lipitor – was chosen as the case target.

Findings

For dealing with this, this paper describes all the details of the corresponding strategies of Pfizer before and after patent expiration of Lipitor. Before patent expiry, Pfizer undertook the activities of direct-to-consumer marketing, pricing strategy for competition, legal delay and me-too drug R&D. After patent expiry, Pfizer chose to carry out continuous marketing for brand, rebate strategy, authorized generics and change to over-the-counter. In addition, diversity and globalization strategy was applied before and after patent expiry.

Research limitations/implications

This research provides strong implication for managing pharmaceutical products before and after patent expiry.

Practical implications

It is strongly recommended for both brand and generic drug companies to design strategies to meet the challenges of pharmaceutical patent expiry.

Social implications

For the global pharmaceutical market, a conclusion can be drawn that, nowadays, the “patent cliff” is the most significant factor influencing decision-makers to consider futuristic policies. Further, it is also a considerably effective solution for reducing health-care costs for policymakers.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the field of patent expiry management in high-tech industries such as pharmaceuticals.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to characterize the properties lightweight green air lime and marble waste mixtures, relating microstructural and chemical properties with physical development of the material, an effort has been made to simulate the structure of the different mortar reinforced by two main layers plants.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper presents an experimental design of response surface methodology, a model which predicts the mechanical strength and evaluate the effectiveness of bio-waste as a corrosion inhibitor to resist the steel corrosion in air lime mortars as a function of the proportion of the constituents of a new air lime mortar based on a combination of different percentages of marble waste (MRW), air lime and deferent type, layers of natural fiber reinforcement. Luffa sponge gourd and oakum hemp fiber residues capabilities in civil engineering are evaluated by combining numerical and experimental approaches for repair mortar based on air lime and marble waste. Several electrochemical techniques, mechanical strength tests and visual inspection of steel surface were performed.

Findings

The results revealed good mechanical strength and corrosion protection properties of air lime mortar containing the fiber naturel. These green wastes are considered economically feasible, as well having possessing good performance efficiency in protecting rebar reinforcement. These results were confirmed via polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements.

Originality/value

The prepared green air lime mortar provided good corrosion protection to the rebar. The significance of this study is to encourage the usage of solid white marble waste to prepare biomass-based repair mortar with good mechanical and anti-corrosion properties on the long term is still a big challenge.

Purpose

Efflorescence formation is very common in cement-based materials. In the case of mortar, efflorescence is more studied when only Portland cement is used as a binder. However, the repair of historical heritage, as well as the construction system of some countries, usually uses mortars composed of hydrated lime and Portland cement. This study aims to determine the influence of the hydrated lime content on the incidence of efflorescence in mortars.

Design/methodology/approach

Mortars with 0%, 50%, and 100% lime/cement ratio were studied, using three different methods to accelerate efflorescence formation. The surface area of mortars affected by efflorescence was quantified by analysis using image software. Also, analysis of mercury intrusion porosity test, flexural tensile, compressive strength, absorption of water by capillarity, porosity, XRD and TGA was performed.

Findings

More efflorescence in mortars with a higher amount of lime in their composition was observed. The results show that the increase in the lime content reduces the flexural tensile and the compressive strength and increased the absorption of water by capillarity and the porosity of the mortars. The material formed by the efflorescence was calcium carbonate, proven by microstructural tests.

Originality/value

The results of greater efflorescence formation in mortars with lime are important to alert users who apply this type of material. Some type of protection must be done more rigorously for lime-cement mortars, especially concerning contact with water, since efflorescence tends to be faster for this type of material.

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the principal–agent and stakeholder theories, this study aims to put forward an intermediary model to verify the intermediary role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in executive equity incentives and corporate innovation performance to improve corporate innovation performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The 2012–2018 A-share listed companies’ disclosure of executive equity incentives data was used as the research sample. This study used CSR as an intermediary to explore the relationship between executive equity incentives and corporate innovation performance. A verification analysis was carried out.

Findings

The research results show that: a positive correlation exists between executive equity incentives and corporate innovation performance, and executives’ reasonable equity incentives can promote the growth of corporate innovation performance. A positive correlation exists between executive equity incentives and CSR. Implementing equity incentives for executives can stimulate their motivation to assume CSR. A positive correlation exists between CSR and corporate innovation performance. The more a company fulfills its social responsibility, the more it can promote the improvement of corporate innovation performance. CSR plays a mediating role between executive equity incentives and corporate innovation performance. CSR promotes executive equity incentives’ impact on corporate innovation performance and exerts a “complete mediating effect” between the two.

Research limitations/implications

The number of samples and the time span of samples can be expanded in the future. This research has tested the mediating effect of CSR, but other mediating variables may play a role in the process of executive equity incentives in promoting corporate innovation performance. Further research should be conducted to explore the mediating effect of financing constraints and media attention on corporate innovation performance. This study only verifies the influence of equity incentives on CSR and innovation performance of senior executives. In the future, other incentive methods should be explored, such as salary incentives.

Practical implications

Foreign research on equity incentives has matured, but the experience of foreign countries cannot necessarily produce the expected effect in China. More than ten years have passed since the China A-share market began implementing equity incentives on December 31, 2005. As of December 31, 2017, about one-third of enterprises in the high-tech industry that had introduced equity incentives had stopped implementing the policy. Data from 2012 to 2018 were selected to analyze the relationship between executive equity incentives, CSR and corporate innovation performance to explore the influence mechanism of equity incentives. This study provides a comprehensive theoretical framework to examine the interaction among executive equity incentives, CSR and corporate innovation performance. Because most previous studies have focused on the relationship between executive equity incentives, CSR and corporate innovation performance, they are rarely been used as an intermediary variable to explore the impact of executive equity incentives on corporate innovation performance. This study explores the impact of executive equity incentives on corporate innovation performance under the influence of CSR. Moreover, this study explores the mediating role of CSR in corporate governance, which provides a new perspective for CSR research and verifies relevant literature on the mediating effect model.

Social implications

Research countermeasures and suggestions: the research results are significant for enterprises implementing executive equity incentives, fulfilling CSR, enhancing corporate reputation, improving corporate innovation performance and ultimately obtaining market competitiveness. Therefore, the following suggestions are proposed: establish and improve the executive equity incentive mechanism and strengthen the promotion effect of executive equity incentives in CSR and corporate innovation performance. Strengthen the awareness of enterprises to actively fulfill CSR and give full play to the role of CSR in promoting corporate innovation performance. Improve the profitability of enterprises and focus on the promotion effect of enterprise profitability on corporate innovation performance.

Originality/value

This study focuses on executive equity incentives and introduces CSR as an intermediary variable to explore the influence path of executive equity incentives on corporate innovation performance. Based on the research results, this study takes targeted measures to improve corporate innovation performance and maintain its healthy growth of corporate innovation performance. This is significant in enhancing enterprises’ core competitiveness and promoting the enterprise economy’s sustainable development. Meanwhile, the enterprise has significant reference value in actively fulfilling its CSR and realizing its stable and healthy development.

The emergence of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has had a tremendous impact on the world, and the characteristics of its evolution need to be better understood.

Abstract

Purpose

The emergence of a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemic has had a tremendous impact on the world, and the characteristics of its evolution need to be better understood.

Design/methodology/approach

To explore the changes of cases and control them effectively, this paper analyzes and models the fluctuation and dynamic characteristics of the daily growth rate based on the data of newly confirmed cases around the world. Based on the data, the authors identify the inflection points and analyze the causes of the new daily confirmed cases and deaths worldwide.

Findings

The study found that the growth sequence of the number of new confirmed COVID-19 cases per day has a significant cluster of fluctuations. The impact of previous fluctuations in the future is gradually attenuated and shows a relatively gentle long-term downward trend. There are four inflection points in the global time series of new confirmed cases and the number of deaths per day. And these inflection points show the state of an accelerated rise, a slowdown in the rate of decline, a slowdown in the rate of growth and an accelerated decline in turn.

Originality/value

This paper has a certain guiding and innovative significance for the dynamic research of COVID-19 cases in the world.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to fit an appropriate mathematical model to express response variables as functions of the proportions of the mixture components. One purpose of statistical modeling in a mixture experiment is to model the blending surface such that predictions of the response for any mixture component, singly or in combination, can be made empirically. Testing of the model adequacy will also be an important part of the statistical procedure.

Design/methodology/approach

A series of mortar using air lime, marble and ceramic sanitary waste aggregates were prepared for statistically designed combinations. The combinations were designed based on the mixture-design concept of design of experiments; this mortar is often used as a filler material in restoration projects. The aim of this work is to find an optimal composition of a paste for the manufacture of air lime mortar with ceramic and marble waste. This investigation aims to recommend mix design for air lime-based mortar, by optimizing the input combination for different properties, and to predict properties such as mechanical strength, thermogravimetric and x-ray diffraction analysis with a high degree of accuracy, based on a statistical analysis of experimental data.

Findings

This paper discusses those mortar properties that architects, contractors and owners consider important. For each of these properties, the influence of ceramic and marble waste in the air lime mortar is explored. The flexibility of lime-based mortars with waste materials to meet a wide range of needs in both new construction and restoration of masonry projects is demonstrated.

Originality/value

The objective of the present investigation is to recommend mixture design for air lime mortar with waste, by optimizing the input combination for different properties, and to predict properties such as compressive strength, flexural strength with a high degree of accuracy, based on the statistical analysis of experimental data. The authors conducted a mixture design study that takes into account dependent parameters such as the constituents of our air lime-based mortar where we have determined an experiment matrix to which we have connected the two responses, namely, compressive and flexural strength. By introducing the desirability criteria of these two responses, using JMP software, we were able to obtain a mixture optimal for air lime mortar with ceramic and marble waste.

Abstract

Purpose

The most recent and prestigious scientific research shows that nitrogen leaching caused by over-used nitrogen fertilizer rapidly acidifies all soil types in China, revolutionizing the basic understanding of the mechanism of soil acidification. The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of nitrogen on soil acidity over the long run, which is the shadow price of nitrogen.

Design/methodology/approach

In a discrete dynamic programming model, this paper compares the nitrogen application and soil pH between optimal nitrogen control that takes the shadow price of nitrogen into consideration and myopic nitrogen control that ignores that shadow price. Using a five-year panel experimental data on a rapeseed-rice rotation, this paper simulates and numerically solves the dynamic model.

Findings

Both theoretically and empirically, this paper shows that the over-use of nitrogen and the decline in soil pH are explained by ignorance of the shadow price of nitrogen. Compared with optimal nitrogen control, myopic nitrogen control applies more nitrogen in total, resulting in lower soil pH. In addition, over-use in the first season contributes to soil acidification and the carry-over effects mitigate that problem.

Originality/value

This paper enriches the literature by extending the study of the environmental impact of nitrogen leaching to its impact on the long-term loss in agricultural production, providing a new theoretical framework in which to study soil acidification rather than conventionally treating soil acidification as a secondary consequence of acid rain, and showing the possibility of using nitrogen control to mitigate soil acidification when lime applications are not feasible due to socio-economic constraints.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to assess the effects of chemically accelerated leaching on the physical and mechanical properties of aerial lime–cement mortars (LCMs).

Design/methodology/approach

Two aerial LCMs, differencing mainly in their calcium hydroxide content, were degraded by the use of an ammonium nitrate solution as a leaching agent. The leaching effects were studied by evaluating the rate of change in physical (sorptivity and mass loss) and mechanical (flexural and compressive strength) characteristics of aerial LCMs. To quantify the evolution and kinetics of degradation, the leached depth was then characterized at different levels of degradation by means of a phenolphthalein solution.

Findings

The experimental results showed that the dissolution of binder decreases the mass, alkalinity and strength of aerial LCMs but increases their sorptivity. A linear relationship was derived by plotting the values of leached depth against the square root of immersion time in an aggressive solution. It was found that the leached depth followed diffusion-controlled kinetics.

Originality/value

It was found that the global loss of compressive strength of aerial LCMs because of complete dissolution of calcium hydroxide can reach up to 80 per cent.
